About GM Option (ASEP)
The General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) was created in response to GM dealers’ needs for qualified service technicians. It represents a partnership between General Motors, the college, dealerships, and the student. This is a two-year Associate’s Degree program that prepares a graduate for a challenging and rewarding career as a GM trained automotive technician. Upon completion of this program, the graduate will also be qualified to test for ASE certification.
GTCC is one of more than 50 NATEF certified colleges that offer this GM sponsored program throughout the US. Students in the program are sponsored by dealerships, and spend eight weeks out of every semester performing paid, hands-on, co-op training at that dealership. The course work is based on the same curriculum used in all of the Automotive Service Technology programs, but is focused on the service, maintenance and repair of GM products.
GM ASEP is a limited enrollment program. In order to qualify for enrollment into the program you must meet college entrance requirements and be employable in the automotive industry. Acceptance into GM ASEP is contingent upon being hired by a sponsoring GM dealership or ACDelco PSC (Professional Service Center). Employment usually requires a valid N.C. driver’s license and a clean driving record. Applicants may be subject to criminal background checks and drug testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to complete this program?
This program takes four semesters and one summer term to complete – two years. The coursework is taught in split semesters, eight weeks at school and eight weeks at General Motors dealerships during each term. During the 8-week co-op time spent at the dealership each term, the student is earning both pay and college credit.
When can I begin the GM ASEP program?
Students must start when the fall term begins in mid-August of each year. Students may take appropriate academic courses offered each semester while they are waiting to enroll in GM ASEP. Contact Josh Gilbert (Ext 50222) for assistance in determining the appropriate starting point for you.
Is financial aid available?
Yes, the Automotive Technology program does qualify for financial assistance. However, the money that a particular student receives depends on their own, and/or their family’s resources. Students wishing to learn more should contact the GTCC Financial Aid Office (336) 334-4822 (ext. 50521). In 1998, new legislation took effect (the “Hope Scholarship”) which enables eligible students to claim tuition and allowable fee charges as a tax “credit” on their federal tax returns – the limits on this tax credit are high enough to cover all tuition and all allowable fees for the two year curriculum. Additionally, eligible veterans may use the GI Bill to offset expenses, as long as they meet all other requirements of the VA. For more information, contact the Office of Veterans Affairs (336) 334-4822 ext. 50521.
Can I complete the program through evening courses?
No. At the present time, all GM ASEP classes are offered only in the daytime.
What is the job market/salary range available for graduates from the GM ASEP program?
Nationwide, there is a shortage of qualified technicians, and that shortage is predicted to last for most of this next decade. Employers are General Motors brand dealerships. Graduates have been offered employment at dealerships throughout North Carolina: in the mountains, at dealerships in the Piedmont and at the beach. Placement for successful graduates is 100%. Starting wages range from $18,000-$35,000 annually, and can reach much more for highly skilled technicians.
